2018 Community End-of-Year Report

Dear Gateway Pet Guardians Supporters:

I wanted to take a moment to celebrate a successful year in the community and highlight a few of our programs. Our community programs are designed to keep pets with their families and out of the area shelter. Below are some of the successes from the past year–all thanks to your support!

We have a special hotline number for…

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Brownie’s Story

This little gremlin gave her family quite the scare today! They knew something was wrong when she was weak, sleepy and disoriented. Worried about her well-being, they reached out, and through the Pet Crisis Fund we were able to get her into the vet. Luckily, she was just hypoglycemic, and with a little sugar she bounced back to her (very vocal) self! Low blood sugar can be deadly for tiny…

Athletes for Animals Grants $2,500 to Fund Spay/Neuter in Metro East

Gateway Pet Guardians is proud to be an Athletes for Animals grant recipient during the Fall 2018 grant cycle. Their support is critical to our work in the Metro East. Through our Spay/Neuter Program, we provide free surgery, vaccinations, microchips, and a nail trim–A4A’s grant will help us continue to provide these services for free!

Over the last five years, Athletes for Animals has…

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Gigi’s Story

Gigi’s mom frantically took her to the vet because she noticed blood in her urine and she was struggling to urinate. She spent the last of her money on an examination, but could not afford the x-rays needed to determine a cause. She took Gigi home and picked up the phone. She called Gateway Pet Guardians for help.

The next day, we got Gigi into one of our partner vets and covered the cost of…

Preparing for the Winter Cold

The Gateway Pet Guardians Community Outreach Team has been out full force for the past week, connecting with pet owners to make sure they have the resources they need to care for their pets! We distributed crates to families who wanted to bring their dogs inside and doghouses and straw to the families who are not able to bring their pets inside. 5 On Your Side joined us as w…

The Utility of a Crate

To some, this might look like a dirty old crate. But to me, it’s the holy grail. Crates are the single easiest tool for pet owners to curb many of the problems and issues we encounter. Destruction, potty training, routine… all addressed through the use of a crate.

Crates give families the confidence to keep pets inside, while protecting the things they own and also keeping their pets saf…

We are excited to announce that The Community Cats Podcast has selected Gateway Pet Guardians to be part of their matching grant program to help fund Trap-Neuter-Return of community cats in the Metro East! Their mission is to provide education, information and dialogue that will create a supportive environment empowering people to help cats in their community. The organization…

East Side Pet Crisis Fund: Ms. Puff’s Story

A few weeks ago, we received a call from Ms. Puff’s mom. She was frantic. Her baby was vomiting, had bloody diarrhea, and was acting lethargic. We worked with her mom to take her to our partner veterinarian, Four Paws Animal Hospital, where we ran some tests. Ms. Puff received some fluids and went home that night to await the results.

The next day, Ms. Puff’s health declined. She rushed her to…

Happy People, Healthy Pets: Virginia Park Vaccination Clinic 2018

On Saturday, October 13, Gateway Pet Guardians hosted a Community Pet Day in Virginia Park where 95 pets received free rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations. GPG also distributed pet supplies, including leashes, collars, treats, and custom engraved pet tags; and signed pets up for free spay/neuter services.

In years past, we have hosted our clinics at Jones Park and Lincoln Park in East St.
