Volunteer With Gateway Pet Guardians
Gateway Pet Guardians has loads of opportunities to volunteer and we always appreciate the help! Aside from general day-to-day animal shelter and rescue operations, we have several long-term and short-term volunteer opportunities available.
Why become a Gateway Pet Guardians Volunteer?
Take a look at just a few of the ways you can get involved in our rescue organization. For a list of specific volunteer positions that are currently available, please contact our Volunteer Chair. For all other general volunteer opportunities, read below.
Tactical Volunteer Opportunities
Gateway has a number of quick and easy ways to volunteer for people who are looking to contribute in a moderate fashion.

- Clerical tasks – volunteer from home! Make phone calls, send emails, stuff and mail envelopes, update spreadsheets and other office-related tasks.
- Transportation – pick-up and drop-off animals for spay/neuter clinics, dogfood donations, and other donations as needed.
- Children ages 12-18 may volunteer for appropriate events if accompanied by an adult.
Shelter volunteers undergo a brief training before signing up for shifts at the Gateway Pet Guardians Emergency Shelter. Shelter volunteers must be 18 or older.
- Feed and walk shelter dogs
- Clean kennels
- Administer medications
- Give baths
- General maintenance – cleaning, laundry, and the occasional handy-man project

Stray Guardians and Community Advocates
We need volunteers who live and work in East St. Louis and the surrounding areas who want to become part of our feeding program, Stray Guardians. We want to make sure that all of the strays are getting a good meal, so we are looking to expand our network. If you live or work in the area and would like to feed, we will provide you with food. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Gateway has several volunteer opportunities for individuals who are looking to become more deeply involved in the organization. These committees meet on an as-needed basis to ensure that individual aspects of Gateway Pet Guardians and its programs run smoothly. Here’s a list of our committees:
Every non-profit needs a Fundraising Team. Gateway Pet Guardians relies entirely on donations and fundraising events to make our rescue operation a success. The Fundraising Committee comes up with ideas for events to meet our fundraising goals and gets to work making them happen! Whether you’d rather brainstorm or just volunteer to run errands, we’re always looking for people to help make our events a success.
Grants are available for non-profits through large and small companies alike, and we apply for grants from business across the country, not just in St. Louis. These organizations require extensive applications and we are seeking a few experienced writers who want to volunteer their time and skills to fill them out.
An integral part of our mission is to educate children and communities about proper pet care as well as the importance of spaying and neutering. We also have a Junior Pet Advocates program for high school students in East St. Louis. If you are interested in helping with the education committee or the Junior Pet Advocates program, please fill out a volunteer application. If you are a high school student in the East St. Louis area and are interested in participating in our Junior Pet Advocates program, please email us.
We need volunteers to help us get the word out! This committee of volunteers is responsible for marketing and advertising, public relations, distributing press releases, updating our media list, promoting Gateway Pet Guardians events and increasing general awareness among the St. Louis community.
If you are interested in any of the positions above, please fill out our volunteer application online and we’ll contact you regarding your fit with our organization. We put a lot of effort into what we do and rely on our volunteers to make it possible. We ask for a three-month commitment from each of our committee volunteers.
