About Gateway Pet Guardians

Passionate & Dedicated Volunteers

Gateway Pet Guardians is a 501(c)3 nonprofit animal shelter whose passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers care for animals on the streets of East St. Louis, Illinois and surrounding areas. Our mission is to end homelessness for animals in the Metro East through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, community outreach and education.

We believe education is the key to reducing the homeless animal problem in our community

Donations are always greatly appreciated and are used to provide veterinary care for our foster pets, some of whom have been badly injured by automobile accidents, cruelty, neglect, or life on the street. Donations are tax-exempt to the extent allowed by law. Please consult your tax advisor for information specific to your tax situation.

Gateway Pet Guardians’ Strategy

Gateway Pet Guardians’ strategy to reduce and eventually eliminate the homeless animal problem in the Metro East community is a multifaceted approach. We depend on passionate volunteers and community leaders to help us execute every layer of our strategy:

Our mission is to end homelessness for animals in the Metro East through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, community outreach and education. Feeding — GPG drives the streets in our communities every day to monitor the condition of homeless animals as we provide them with food.  We also provide food to low income dog animal owners.

Rescue — GPG responds to animal welfare issues that are identified by our volunteer feeders or from calls within the community.  We follow up on those situations by either educating the owners in question or by rescuing the animal, when we have the resources available.

Foster Homes – GPG has a vetted process that allows us to train, temporarily house, feed, medicate, and rehabilitate homeless dogs. This process gives us an opportunity to find our foster animals the appropriate forever/adoptive home.

Veterinarian Care – GPG has negotiated reduced cost care from skilled and dedicated veterinarians willing to discount their services to help stray animals.

Adoption — GPG provides assistance in finding qualified permanent homes for our rescued or fostered animals.  This is an important process that is dependent on the assistance and approval of the specific animal’s foster family.

Community Outreach– GPG provides several free services and assistance to the residents in our community including free spay/neuter clinics for qualified individuals, microchip events, vaccination events, dog house donations and food distributions.  Our goal is to keep pets in homes healthy and happy by supporting their owners and prevent animals from ending up on the streets.

Education – GPG is dedicated to educating the residents in our community about the importance of animal care, including a commitment to spay or neuter their animals.  We believe education is the key to reducing the homeless animal problem in our community so we plan to continually evolve this component of our organization.

Shelter – Our goal of opening an emergency shelter has come true! We were donated a space at 5321 Manchester Avenue by Hillside Animal Hospital in June 2012, but we need time to establish a capital campaign for some necessary renovations and expansion.  This facility will help us temporarily house rescued dogs on an emergency basis.
